United Community Center of Westchester Inc. Honored with the Dr. Harold Keltz Distinguished Public Health Service Award

At United Community Center of Westchester Inc. (UCCW), we are deeply honored and grateful to receive the Dr. Harold Keltz Distinguished Public Health Service Award from the Westchester County Board of Health. This prestigious recognition highlights our unwavering commitment to tobacco and vaping prevention education for children and teenagers and smoking cessation support for adults.

The award ceremony, held in honor of National Public Health Week, was a powerful reminder of the vital role that public health organizations play in protecting and improving the well-being of our communities. The event was attended by Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins, Board of Health President Dr. Robert Baker, and other distinguished public health advocates, professionals, and community leaders.

A Commitment to Public Health and Prevention

For years, UCCW has been at the forefront of tobacco and vaping prevention efforts, working tirelessly to educate young people about the dangers of nicotine addiction and empower them to make healthier choices. In addition to our youth-focused initiatives, we provide smoking cessation programs for adults, offering resources, guidance, and support to those who want to quit smoking and lead healthier lives.

Our work aligns with Westchester County’s broader mission to preserve, protect, and promote the health of its residents. As County Executive Ken Jenkins noted during the ceremony:

“Today, we honor two individuals and two agencies whose work helps to save and extend the lives of Westchester residents, whether through preventing tobacco use or drowning or through the detection, prevention, and treatment of cancer. I want to thank the dedicated staff of the Westchester County Department of Health, Health Commissioner Dr. Sherlita Amler, and the volunteers who serve on our Westchester County Board of Health, for their essential service to our community. With their extraordinary concern for others, these volunteers set an example for all of us. I congratulate the winners and encourage other residents to choose this path.”

These words reinforce the importance of public health initiatives and the collective effort needed to create a healthier, safer future for all.

“Hoy honramos a dos individuos y dos organizaciones cuyo trabajo ayuda a salvar y prolongar la vida de los residentes de Westchester, ya sea a través de la prevención del consumo de tabaco, la prevención de ahogamientos o la detección, prevención y tratamiento del cáncer. Quiero agradecer al dedicado personal del Departamento de Salud del Condado de Westchester, a la Comisionada de Salud, la Dra. Sherlita Amler, y a los voluntarios que sirven en nuestra Junta de Salud del Condado de Westchester por su servicio esencial a nuestra comunidad.
